Electrophysical Therapy

The practice of using safe electric pulses to stimulate muscles, leading to a variety of benefits during the rehabilitation process.

Electrophysical Therapy

Often used for treating muscle tension and swollen joints, and to aid in recovery from surgical procedures

The majority of Electrophysical Therapy techniques work by affecting the transport of blood to and from injured areas, or by stimulating the nerves.

Uses of Electrotherapy include:

  • relaxing muscle spasms
  • pain management
  • increasing blood circulation
  • aiding in muscle rehabilitation
  • improving range of motion
  • increasing strength and motor control

Electrophysical techniques include: Ultrasound, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), and the application of heat or cold to an injured area.

Each techniques serves different purposes: for example, ultrasound is best suited for injuries such as ligament sprains and tendonitis; TENS works best on increased muscle tension and heightened pain sensitivity; and NMES is most appropriate for patients with post-surgical muscle weakness.

Getting Started with Electrophysical Therapy

Book a Physiotherapy Treatment

Ready to book your physiotherapy appointment? Here are some points to consider:

  • your first visit will consist of a thorough, hands-on assessment, often accompanied with education and exercise guidance
  • if you feel it is important to have electrical therapies administered on your first visit, please bring this up to your therapist at the time of the assessment
  • we find that the best results are collaborative – your dedication to doing your prescribed exercise is as important as the therapy you receive
  • you don’t have to choose a treatment (such as Electrophysical Therapy) – just book your session and your physical therapist will work with you to determine the best course of action
